Using a Steamer to Remove Wallpaper

March 18, 2019

Removing wallpaper can be hard work. However, with the right tools the job can be so much easier. Dare I say it, even fun!

Before we talk about the process of using a wallpaper steamer, we first need to mention safety. Steamers give off a constant jet of hot steam, and just like a boiling kettle, it is very easy to burn yourself, either directly from the steam, or by falling droplets of hot water. Gloves are an absolute must. I'd also recommend safety glasses, and long sleeves if this is your first time using one.

Ok, so now on with the task of stripping the wallpaper. I don't recommend scoring the wallpaper, at least at first. I like to start with the steamer at the top of a wallpaper drop and see if the sheet can be removed in one piece. Start by holding the steamer pad on the paper for around 30 seconds, then gently peel. If it doesn't come away at all, place the steamer back onto the paper for another 30 seconds. Repeat this working left to right, top to bottom of each drop of wallpaper.

Watch the video below, where Graham strips wallpaper at a recent job in Carterton, Oxfordshire. This will give you an idea of the working method.

Once the paper has been stripped, check back over the wall to see if and remaining backing is still in place, as these may need steaming off too.

Remember to switch off the steamer, and leave to cool down before you empty the water.

Remember, some wallpapers are easier to remove than others. Wallpaper such as woodchip, or paper that has been in place for many years can be much more time consuming to remove.
